Looking to improve your posture, either for daily wheelchair use or for specific lifestyle activities?
Every SCI athlete has been told “sit up tall,” but after paralyzing injury, simply sitting – let alone sitting tall – can be quite challenging. By examining what makes some postures better than others, and understanding your own needs in a particular environment (think chair, walker, car), you can improve much faster!
We observe this happen in SCI athletes we work with, and we’re confident that no matter your level of injury, this approach can help you, too.
We will start by discussing fundamentals of anatomy, the concept of “neutral” posture, static vs. dynamic positions, and the role of fascial lines. Then, we will demonstrate exercises – in the wheelchair and on the floor – to stretch and strengthen the spine. We will also explore strategies for immediate improvement of your sitting environment for improved spinal positioning.
We’re confident this workshop will help you see posture training in a new way...and motivate you to do more of it!
Through this program, you will:
- Learn fundamental anatomy as it relates to posture in SCI athletes
- Self-assess default posture and understand where & what the root issue is
- Identify ways to immediately improve posture by adding supports to the wheelchair and in exercise setups
- Practice spine exercises curated specifically for SCI athletes of various injury levels
BONUS! After completing all the modules in the workshop, implement the concepts you have learned in a 45-minute floor-based movement class - sequenced & coached with workshop concepts in mind. We encourage you to incorporate this class into your weekly movement routine! PDF of the exercise sequence included for easy reference.
